FIGURE SKATING


Figure skating involves "figure" riding on ice, as its name suggests. The sport requires athletes to skate on selected patterns or figures as part of their routine. Ice skating has evolved from a practical way of walking around on ice to an elegant blend of art and sports today.


The Dutch were arguably the early pioneers of skating. They began to use canals to maintain communication by skating from village to village, dating back to the 13th century. Skates eventually spread across the Channel to England, and soon the first clubs and artificial links began to form. Passionate skaters included several British kings, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon III, and German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.


Two Americans are responsible for major developments in sports history. In 1850, Edward Bushnell of Philadelphia revolutionized skating by introducing steel blade skates that allowed for complex manipulation and rotation. In the 1860s, ballet master Jackson Haynes, who lives in Vienna, added elements of ballet and dance to give the sport grace.
